Celebrating Life and What Matters Most
As my husband and I celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary this month, I find myself reflecting on the true meaning of life, love, and the importance of savoring every moment. In a world that often pulls us in countless directions, it’s easy to take the basics for granted—those fundamental aspects of life that make everything else worthwhile. This celebration is not just about a number or years together; it’s a reminder of the beauty of the journey and what really matters most in life.
Life Is a Gift We Often Forget to Open
We live in a fast-paced world where we rush from one task to the next, often with little time to pause and breathe. In doing so, we can miss the joy in the simple things—the smile of a loved one, a quiet morning, or a moment of laughter shared with a friend. How often do we take the time to celebrate the very act of living? We assume there will always be more time, more opportunities, and more chances to be with the people we care about.
But life is fragile, and nothing is guaranteed. My husband and I have learned, especially over the last few decades, that what truly matters are not the milestones we reach but the moments we create and share along the way. It’s the way we choose to spend our days and the intention we bring to our relationships that count.
Self-Care: Honoring Your Journey
Celebrating life begins with honoring yourself. In today’s society, where there is constant pressure to achieve and succeed, we often overlook the importance of self-care and self-leadership. But taking care of yourself is one of the greatest gifts you can give not only to yourself but also to those around you.
Self-leadership means recognizing that you have the power to create the life you want by taking intentional actions every day. It’s about being mindful of your well-being—physical, emotional, and mental. True success, after all, is not measured by what you achieve in the world but by how authentically you live your life and how aligned you are with your values.
For my husband and me, one of the greatest lessons we’ve learned is that caring for ourselves is not selfish; it is essential. We’ve learned to pause, reflect, and make time for what nourishes us—whether it’s a simple walk, a heartfelt conversation, or just being in each other’s presence.
Love Is at the Heart of It All
If there’s one thing that 40 years of marriage has taught us, it’s that love is the cornerstone of everything. Not just romantic love, but the love we cultivate in our friendships, families, and communities. It’s the connection we create with others that gives life meaning.
Our anniversary is not just a celebration of time but a celebration of the love that has grown, evolved, and deepened over the years. It’s a reminder that love, like life, requires care, attention, and nurturing. We’ve learned that the small, everyday acts of love—a kind word, a gentle touch, or simply being present—are what sustain a relationship over the long haul.
What Matters Most
As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded of what matters most in life: love, connection, and the joy of simply being alive. It’s not about chasing success, wealth, or recognition. It’s about embracing the people you love, living authentically, and appreciating the small moments that make life extraordinary.
We often think we have forever, but in reality, all we have is this moment. Let’s make it count. Let’s celebrate the gift of life, the beauty of love, and the privilege of sharing this journey with others. As we look back on the last 40 years, we are grateful for each other, for the life we’ve built, and for the moments—big and small—that have filled our hearts with joy.
May we never take any of it for granted.
