Stop being Superman or Superwoman

Every single day, I see people in my practice telling me that they did not see the signs of their debilitating stress, until it was too late. Often, we think we are superwoman or superman and that chronic stress and its dangerous consequences only to other people. I did not paid attention to the signs of serious stress and I paid a big price for it.

Do you think you are superwoman or superman? Do you think the serious stress-related illnesses can only happen to others and not to you? This article is to warn you that it can happen to all of us, if we are not conscious about how stress can affect us and what continuous stress and strain do to our mind and body.

It is clear that in our world today, we are rarely faced with life threatening situations which put our life in real danger. The fight or flight response, that is a build-in defense mechanism, is not triggered anymore by a serious physical danger. All our stress responses are caused by multiple negative and emotional stressful events these days.

We are exposed to consistent pressure to perform and multitask in life. We constantly think of all the things we “should” be doing and the person that we “should” be. Along with this pressure there is a deep dissatisfaction and fear of “not being good enough”. We are continuously demanding ourselves to perform at our peak stress level.

The consistent injection of stress-related bio-chemicals weakens a person’s body, which leads to degenerative effect on our health.

Well, here is the good news. If you know the signals, you can detect for yourself if you are suffering from stress more than your mental and physical health can handle.

And you can reverse it. The Universe is there to protect us, every single day. It gives us signs and signals that we are surcharging our system, going in overdrive or asking too much of ourselves.

Our body is a miracle vehicle that shows us very clearly when we are overdoing it, if only we listen! Our intuition is a miracle tool that tells us exactly what is right and what is wrong for us, if only we know when it speaks to us.

The 5 signs of serious stress

Here are 5 signs that you are in that continuous survival mode and that you need to take action to reverse the process and take care of your body, mind and soul.

  1. You feel like living on autopilot or life is a rush.

Do you feel that your life is passing you by and you have no moments to stop and enjoy the scenery? Are you feeling out of control and not grasping the real moments that matter?

  1. You can hardly stop your thinking modus and feel what you want

Do you feel your mind is racing against the clock and you cannot go from thinking to feeling anymore?

  1. You have difficulty to concentrate and focus.

Do you forget what you were coming to get in the kitchen or do you have trouble concentrating on your work in the afternoon, feeling absent and distracted?

  1. You have trouble falling asleep or waking up in the morning

Do you need lots of time to unwind before you can relax at night? Is your brain talking to itself while trying to sleep? Are you feeling tired in the morning and not fresh to get out of bed?

  1. You have a difficult time to relax and enjoy yourself

Do you feel like your body and mind are still in overdrive when you try to slow down? Are you having difficulty to really have pleasure in simple things?

These 5 signs of serious stress can seem unimportant to you. If you recognise more than one of them, it is time to “STOP”. Tell yourself that you might be suffering from more stress than you can handle. Please take good conscious care of yourself. Get some guidance in how you can reverse your signals and symptoms and live in balance and harmony with yourself and your environment.
